The 4-week schedule
New sod has almost no roots when it arrives. For the first weeks it can only drink from the top inch or two of soil, so it needs short, frequent watering — then less often and deeper as roots grow. This schedule follows UF/IFAS Extension guidance for Florida lawns.
| When | How often | How much | Goal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Install day | Right after the last piece is laid | Soak until the soil under the sod is wet | Sod and soil in full contact |
| Days 1–10 | 2–3 times a day | Short cycles: about 5–10 min spray heads, 15–20 min rotors | Keep the sod and top inch of soil moist until roots “peg” down |
| Days 11–20 | Once a day | About ¼ inch | Push roots deeper |
| Days 21–30 | Every other day | About ½ inch | Sod should not lift when you tug it |
| After ~4 weeks | Only when the lawn shows stress | About ½–¾ inch | Normal, established-lawn watering |
Times are a starting point. Sandy soil, full sun and summer heat can need more; cool, cloudy weeks need less. In a summer drought, keep the frequent schedule a little longer.
How to tell it’s working
- Roots are taking: gently tug a corner — after about 10 days it should resist; by week 3–4 it should not lift.
- Too dry: edges curl or shrink, seams open, blades turn blue-gray or footprints stay.
- Too wet: soil squishes, puddles stay, mushrooms or a sour smell. Cut back a cycle.
Measure ¼ and ½ inch the easy way
Set a few empty tuna cans across the lawn, run one zone, and time how long it takes to fill them ¼ inch. That is your run time for that zone.
Mowing new sod
Wait until the sod is rooted (it won’t lift) — usually 2–3 weeks. Mow at the high end for your variety and never take more than a third of the blade at once.
| Variety | Mowing height |
|---|---|
| St. Augustine Floratam | 3.5–4 in |
| Palmetto St. Augustine | 3–4 in |
| Empire Zoysia | 2–2.5 in |
| Bahia | 3–4 in |
| Bermuda | 0.5–1.5 in |
Other first-month tips
- Water early in the morning; avoid evening watering that leaves blades wet overnight.
- Keep kids, pets and heavy traffic off for the first 2 weeks.
- Hold off on fertilizer until the sod is rooted, usually 30–60 days.
- Miami-Dade and Broward give newly installed landscaping a temporary watering allowance outside normal watering days. Check the current Miami-Dade water restrictions or your city’s rules before you set the timer.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I water new sod in South Florida?
2–3 short waterings a day for the first 7–10 days, then once a day with about ¼ inch for 7–10 days, then every other day with about ½ inch. Most lawns are rooted in 3–4 weeks.
Can I overwater new sod?
Yes. Puddles, soggy soil, mushrooms or a sour smell mean too much water. New sod needs the top inch of soil moist, not flooded.
When can I mow new sod?
When it is rooted and won’t lift when you tug a corner — usually 2–3 weeks. Mow at the high end for your variety.
When should I fertilize new sod?
Wait until it is rooted, usually 30–60 days after installation. Fertilizing too early can burn new roots.
Do watering restrictions apply to new sod?
Miami-Dade and Broward allow extra watering for newly installed landscaping for a limited time. Check your county or city’s current rules before setting your timer.
